This means you can either accept the optionality, or typecast it to a non-optional type and use the nil coalescing operator to handle missing values. When retrieving objects, the result is optional. Let useTouchID = defaults.bool(forKey: "UseTouchID") With that in mind, you can read values back like this: let age = defaults.integer(forKey: "Age") object(forKey:) returns AnyObject? so you need to conditionally typecast it to your data type.double(forKey:) returns a double if the key existed, or 0.0 if not.float(forKey:) returns a float if the key existed, or 0.0 if not.bool(forKey:) returns a boolean if the key existed, or false if not.integer(forKey:) returns an integer if the key existed, or 0 if not.You need to know what these default values are so that you don't confuse them with real values that you set. When it comes to reading data back, it's still easy but has an important proviso: UserDefaults will return a default value if the setting can't be found. As an advance warning, you might find some old tutorials recommend calling the synchronize() method to force your data to save, but Apple has asked us not to do that for some years now.Īs mentioned, you can use UserDefaults to store arrays and dictionaries, like this: let array = ĭt(array, forKey: "SavedArray") When you set values like that, they become permanent – you can quit the app then re-launch and they'll still be there, so it's the ideal way to store app configuration data. Here's an example of setting some values: let defaults = UserDefaults.standardĭt("Paul Hudson", forKey: "Name")ĭt(Date.now, forKey: "LastRun") This system, called UserDefaults can save integers, booleans, strings, arrays, dictionaries, dates and more, but you should be careful not to save too much data because it will slow the launch of your app. I've been using it extensively for years and have pretty much enjoyed it the whole time. All iOS apps have a built in data dictionary that stores small amounts of user settings for as long as the app is installed. Regardless of this annoyance, I still love Evernote. You can also use a more round-about way, using more clicks and contextual menus to get this done in TextEdit or Microsoft Word, but the Dictionary app looks to me to be the quickest way to get it done, until the Evernote folks get their heads on straight! Once this is done, it takes a few seconds for the red dots to disappear, but disappear they will. I'm using macOS Big Sur and opening the Dictionary App (in the Applications folder) will allow me to type in the affected word and then in that very field where I type the word, I can right-click select, "Learn Spelling." You have to make sure the entire word is selected, not just click inside the word or else you won't see the "Learn Spelling" selection. I'm just thinking, "What the heck?! Really?!" Removing the ability to "Learn spelling" and still include the annoying little red dots indicating that a word is misspelled, has to be a violation of fundamental programming 101.įortunately, there is a pretty simple way to "Learn spelling," at least on a Mac. I agree with nearly every one else here that it was a dumb idea to remove "Learn Spelling" in the new Evernote. Oh and no, my PC doesn't name me as magnoliasouth. Quick problem (for those TLDR folks): How do I edit words that I have accidentally added to spell check, as okay? It is not in C:\Users\magnoliasouth\AppData\Local\Evernote\Evernote\Dict\user.dic or any folder pastĬ:\Users\magnoliasouth\AppData\Local\Evernote* I tried deleting it and it was unchanged. It didn't matter, neither of them work, for one, the default.dic file was empty so that was no help. Reset the keyboard dictionary: Choose Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary. I tried reading this: and this #option2 because I thought that perhaps since the first one didn't work, maybe it was a Windows thing. I'm not calling out Evernote because I blame Windows for making it difficult. I find it discouraging that it is so hard to correct spell check dictionaries. Unfortunately for me, I'm faster at doing that than my brain can work because I added misspelled words (not names, not that it matters). In the window that pops up, type in the word you want removed in the text field then click on the Forget. Open TextEdit, then go to Edit > Spelling > Spelling. I haven't figured how to reset it completely, but did discover a way to remove specific words you added. I got sick of the red squiggles and knowing I would definitely use those surnames again, I began adding them like crazy. I'm guessing you're referring to Mac's system-wide spell checker. Today I was writing a lot of surnames along with details. Thorough explanation of the problem: I use a lot of abbreviations that I may or may not ever need to use again which spell check often snags as incorrect. Net income is calculated by subtracting all production-related and overhead expenses from the company's net revenue, also referred to as the top line. The company must account for overhead expenses to determine its net income, also referred to as the bottom line. For example, a service-based business with an office has overhead expenses, such as rent, utilities, and insurance that are in addition to direct costs of providing its service.Įxpenses related to overhead appear on a company's income statement, and they directly affect the overall profitability of the business. The income statement reports overhead expenses.Ī company must pay overhead on an ongoing basis, regardless of how much or how little the company sells. There exist different categories of overhead, such as administrative overhead, which includes costs related to managing a business.Overhead can be fixed, variable, or a hybrid of both. This excludes the direct costs associated with creating a product or service. Overhead refers to the ongoing costs to operate a business. In short, overhead is any expense incurred to support the business while not being directly related to a specific product or a service. Overhead, generally speaking, is important for budgeting purposes and it is also taken into account while determining how much a company must charge for its products or services to earn a profit. Overhead refers to the ongoing business expenses that are not directly attributed while creating a product or delivering a service. In practice, 90-degree rotation is often sufficient, and you can plot data in reverse order to flip a chart 180 degrees around the vertical, but this is still limited. Compare this with Claris Resolve’s 360 degrees around the vertical axis and 90 degrees around the horizontal, Microsoft Excel 3.0’s 360 degrees around the vertical and 180 degrees around the horizontal, and Visual Business Systems’ GraphMaster’s 360-degree rotation around the x-,y-, and z- axes (see the GraphMaster review in this issue). Like its predecessor, DeltaGraph Professional can rotate three-dimensional charts no more than 90 degrees on either the x- or y- axis. For example, one dialog box now controls both ticks and grids a Preferences setting lets users double-click on the various chart components to access dialog boxes for Labels, Axis, and Ticks and Grids and creating bullet and organizational charts is a simple matter of entering information in a new Text window, clicking on the Plot button, and then choosing the format you like. What changes have been made to the interface are helpful. The new software builds on the earlier interface, and the steps to create a chart are the same: entering numbers in or importing numbers to a built-in spreadsheet (called a data sheet), selecting a chart type, and plotting the data. Users familiar with DeltaGraph 1.5 should find it easy to migrate to DeltaGraph Professional. A major upgrade to the highly regarded DeltaGraph 1.5, DeltaGraph Professional supports 13 new chart types and adds many of the presentation capabilities found in programs like Aldus Persuasion and Symantec’s More. Feature for Feature, DeltaGraph Professional is the best general-purpose business and technical charting program available for the Macintosh. Lurking in the background of his argument is the same anti-religious message that Voltaire is advancing in The Philosophical Dictionary. Later in the film he specifically asserts that there is no such knowledge. His references to “the knowledge of gods” may mislead some into thinking that he is claiming that such knowledge exists. Why this is unjustified in most scientists’ opinion is beyond the scope of these modest notes, but it is important to keep in mind that Bronowski does believe in scientific knowledge: he simply denies that it is complete or perfect. Philosophers and other humanists have often seized on uncertainty theory and quantum physics to argue for skepticism, and tried to use it to deny all validity to science. But all knowledge is limited, never absolute. He emphasizes that we can be very precise about what we can and cannot know through scientific means. It is crucial to understand that he is not saying that there is no such thing as knowledge, or that all approaches to knowledge are equal. Watch for this man’s face to return at the very end of the film in the context of another reference to “touch.” Some aspects of our knowledge of this man which cannot be conveyed by scientific instruments can be conveyed instead by an artist trying to convey the man’s spirit or by a blind woman actually touching the man’s face. The point of this exercise is to demonstrate that all perception, including that provided by scientific investigation, is necessarily imperfect, limited. He begins the film by focusing a number of devices on the face of an unnamed elderly man to see how much detail each can produce. You do not have to understand modern atomic physics to follow his argument, but it helps. Both argue that the logical result of human limitations should be tolerance. The defense of science which Bronowski mounts depends on the “uncertainty principle,” or “indeterminacy” or–as he prefers–“the principle of tolerance.” His insistence that there is no absolute truth, not even in science, descends from the same line of reasoning as Voltaire’s insistence on the limits of knowledge. However, we are viewing this film for a slightly different reason. This episode of “The Ascent of Man” concentrates on two catastrophic events of the 20th century for which scientists have often been blamed: the Nazi genocide of the Jews and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This connection led him to Nagasaki after the war to study the effects of the atomic bombing there, but he came away convinced that scientists needed to pay more attention to the ethics of science, and in particular the danger that their discoveries would be misused. During World War II, his work helped to increase the effectiveness of bombing raids. Jacob Bronowski (born 1908) emigrated with his family from Poland to Germany to England, where he studied mathematics at Cambridge University. Although it shows its age a bit (smaller particles than that shown have been “photographed” since and the sexist title of the original series would probably be changed to something like “The Ascent of Humanity” today), most of it is still scientifically valid. “Knowledge or Certainty” is an episode in the 1973 BBC series “The Ascent of Man,” a history of science from the prehistoric period to modern times.
Using a system like Bear/Ulysses means the app has some complicated system for “external” folders. This means some folder on my computer containing our notes and other stuff. For my kind of work, I use GitHub repos for projects. This same design means I can access Nota notes on computers without the app through the iCloud web interface, or use a totally different app like iA Writer on iOS. This means if you already pay for iCloud or Dropbox or whatever, then you just place your Nota root under that system and get file syncing for free. Nota behaves in the same way via the app, but ultimately the notes are stored under a “root” folder on your computer (that you select when you setup). The great thing about Bear is that I can organize my notes and I don’t think about where they are saved. Ultimately, the way files are stored really sold me on Nota. Eventually, they plan on building an iOS app as well. So, I use iA Writer on iOS, but I mainly write on my Mac so this isn’t an issue. Only thing on your list that is missing is an iOS app… but Nota’s plain text file design means you aren’t locked in (like you would be with Bear or Craft). This is not like iA Writer which has a full preview split view. It does inline preview, so things like images or math are automatically rendered alongside the rest of the markdown. I think it’s 100% worth the price having paid for all of the above in the past. I’ve finally found an app that has it all: Nota. First class app for the Apple ecosystem. It seems that I prioritize the same things you do: I’ve looked at Obsidian too, but it was eliminated from my list from the get go for design + being overkill for me. I’ve tried many note taking/markdown apps (Bear, Craft, Ulysses, iA Writer, Notable, VS Code + plugins, Sublime Text + plugins, Simplenote, Taio, FS Notes). The Succubus is a boss exclusive to Alucard. She has 666 HP, referencing the number of the beast. If she defeats Alucard in The Dracula X Chronicles, she will say: "Come wander the darkness with me, love." Barbara Whitlow voices her in the original English dub, while Jessica Straus does the voice in Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles version of the game. Rica Fukami is the voice actress for the Succubus in the Japanese version. The attack won't stop until either the real one or all of her copies are hit. Creates several copies of herself and makes each of them to shoot two homing projectiles (25 ATT, Hit).Lengthens the bones of her wings (30 ATT, Cut).Spreads a swarm of petals, similar to Karasuman (17 ATT, Curse). Due to her death in the dream world, her soul is sent wandering for eternity. The scene ends with Alucard seeing through the illusion and resulting in an encounter between him and the Succubus. If Alucard rests in that particular coffin, the Succubus appears in a nightmare and recreates the moment of Lisa's execution, taking her appearance. One of these save points, located in the Underground Caverns, is different from the rest (colored in purple). Throughout the castle, Alucard is able to rest in coffins in order to restore his health and save the game. The Succubus disguises herself as Alucard's mother, Lisa, in order to deceive him. Appearances Castlevania: Symphony of the Night When these claws are damaged or destroyed, it is rendered powerless. The powers of a Succubus or Incubus reside in its claws. They possess the ability to create illusions –ranging from taking the appearance of loved ones, to creating illusory dream worlds or sensations– to soothe their victims, lulling them into a false sense of security. Succubi or Incubi take on the appearance of very attractive men or women. The feeling of pressure on the chest, as well as other sensations, such as hearing voices or having hallucinations, has caused the Succubus and Incubus myth to be linked to sleep paralysis. Succubi and incubi are often said to appear to men or women in their dreams, although other versions state that they actually sit on the chests of their victims while they sleep. The male-form succubus, or incubus, draws its name from the Latin incubare, meaning "to lie upon".Īlthough the terms succubus and incubus have their roots in Latin, entities with the same characteristics have appeared in the Sumerian King list from 2400 B.C., where the father of the hero Gilgamesh is identified as Lilu, said to be a demon who disturbs and seduces women in their sleep one of four types of demons to which "the dark maid Lilith" gave birth to. The word succubus is derived from the Latin succubare, meaning "to lie beneath". They draw energy from men or women to sustain themselves, often until the point of exhaustion or death of the victim. 3.7 Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the NightĪ succubus or incubus is a demon from European folklore during the medieval ages, which takes the form of an attractive woman or man to seduce the opposite sex. In 2006, Elmwood resident Carol “Kip” DeFeciani purchased the property and initiated another overhaul, restoring the diner to its historic appearance and opening for business as The Liberty Elm. Some knew it as the Elmwood Diner, Jenn’s Elmwood Diner, Ole Elmwood Diner, Louie’s Diner, Roberto’s Café, or La Criolla Restaurant. #806 was known as Central Diner through 1972 but it has changed hands, changed names, and received a number of facelifts since then. Business was moving away from central downtown locations and spreading into the suburbs due to the exploding prevalence of automobiles. Elmwood Avenue was a thriving commercial corridor, with the Elmwood Theatre and numerous other businesses in the immediate neighborhood. Narducci relocated the #806 six years later 2.75 miles south to 777 Elmwood Avenue and built a new concrete block kitchen. 27 West Exchange Street (where the Westin Hotel stands today) was in thick of the city’s central business district, steps away from Union Station, City Hall, hotels, theaters, factories, offices, shops, warehouses, residences, and garages. In 1947, Ralph “Truck” Narducci of Providence ordered the custom-built diner - completely furnished and stocked - and opened it for business at the corner of West Exchange and Gaspee streets in Downtown Providence as the Central Diner. As diners go, they are not as mobile as a trailer but they can be moved, and as businesses come and go, so do names. Worcester Lunch Car Company Diner #806 (henceforth simply called #806) has been known by many names and two locations. |
